Igreja Católica Nossa Senhora dos Mártires
Church of the Martyrs
In gratitude for the victory in the conquest of Lisbon from the Moors, the first king of Portugal, Afonso Henriques, chose this site to erect a chapel dedicated to Saint Mary of the Martyrs.
This was the first Catholic church in the city of Lisbon and also represents its oldest parish. In the same document, and for similar reasons, the king ordered the construction of a monastery dedicated to Saint Vincent.
The original Chapel of the Martyrs was completely destroyed by the 1755 earthquake. However, the relics of the Holy Martyrs survived and are now kept in the Altar of Souls inside the current church.
Rebuilt in 1769 by architect Reinaldo Manuel dos Santos, the Church of the Martyrs harmoniously forms the heart of Chiado and is frequently mentioned in the novels of Eça de Queirós as a social meeting point or a refuge for his characters in 19th-century Lisbon.
On the main door, there is a bas-relief by Francisco Leal Garcia (1695–1781), depicting King Afonso Henriques kneeling in gratitude for his victory. Inside, there is a single nave with an interesting painting by Pedro Alexandrino (1730–1809), illustrating the first king of Portugal’s vow to build the Church of Our Lady of the Martyrs and the Monastery of São Vicente de Fora.

Constância, formerly known as Punhete, had an important port for centuries, which allowed it to develop economically through river transport, shipbuilding, and fishing.
These river-related activities, which were carried out until the mid-20th century, left many traces scattered throughout the town and at risk of being lost. It is the role of the Museum of Rivers and Maritime Arts to collect, study, preserve, and promote this vast cultural heritage.
